GUIDELINES FOR HOME TRAINING

1. You must do a brief warm up exercises as shown in Series A, Tape #1.

2. Train within your level of fitness. The harder you hit the focus mitts/shields, the harder the workout.

3. Never, Never, Never lock out your elbows or knees. If you do, you will be hurting for weeks or months. If your partner is moving away from you too fast, do not attempt to reach for the target, that's when you will end up locking your elbows or knees. You will learn to adjust your distance for the proper range of delivery maximum power. Every individual is build differently and will not punch or kick alike, the same goes for holding the focus mitts and shields. You will learn to adjust to how they move or hold the equipment. There will not be a PERFECT target for you to hit on the streets! Our drill teaches you to adapt and you have to learn this automatically and quickly!

4. Take frequent water breaks. Remember, KSD's workouts are very intenseand rigorous!

5. For punching, gradually increase your power, the WEAKEST link for everyone is the WRIST. Follow the guideline in Series A, Tape #1 very carefully as to how to condition your wrist for maximum power.

6. For days and weeks, you body will be sore all over. Work through the soreness by reducing the intensity of your workout until your body adjust to the workout.

7. When you train with the STAMINA tapes, even when you have adjusted to KSD workouts, your muscles will aches all over again as this stamina workout takes you to extreme intensity.

Should you have any questions pertaining to your workout using the KSD video series, please e-mail them to Master Roger Koo.

I finally had the pleasure of meeting Master Koo and participating in a workout as a guest of a former student, Bridgette Bowen, on April 12, 2004. I was visiting the area as a prospective graduate student at Georgia Tech. Having viewed the KSDI website several months prior to the visit, I was most certainly impressed and had made the visit to the studio an integral part of the trip to the area. I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of intensity and duration, as this was to be an hour-long training session. The workout was exceptional! Having been an active participant of martial arts and also a certified fitness instructor, I had assumed that I was in good shape. I was in for a rude awakening. What an intense and satisfying workout! From what I have seen on the website and from this brief personal experience, Master Koo certainly has a way of reaching in drawing out one's inner strength and using it to the maximum potential. The multiple-punch combination aerobic routines during the first half of the class made my deltoids feel as if they were on fire. The target punches and kicks against a resistance were a real killer! I haven't ever worked this hard in all the years of practice! I'd give this class the highest rating of all the workouts that I've ever done and would give the school a very high rating. Should I choose to pursue graduate studies at Tech, I'll be an active participant at KSDI!

Subject: Thank You
Master Koo;
I wanted to take the opportunity to extend my gratitute for allowing me to attend one of your classes last week. I was visiting the metro area as a prospective graduate student for the fall '04 term in chemistry at Georgia Tech and was invited as a guest of Bridgette Bowen if you may recall.
The class was certainly the most intense that I've experienced, specifically the punch and kick drills against resistance. This has been missing from my workouts for a long time. Should the opportunity arise that I am accepted into the graduate program, please be advised that I will enroll in your school.
Also, I want to concur with you on your viewpoints regarding many of the "structured" mainstream forms of martial arts. These never seemed practical, should the need arise to defend one's self. The first personal exposure was that of the traditional Japanese karate while attending high school. This was much too rigid and did not allow one to develop a personal style. Likewise, the katas were never really understood, maybe an artform, but again not practical. I've also studied Hapkido. This was more of a practical fighting art, as one developed a personal style and was allowed a "free form" style of sparring. The grappling and throws were very practical, again, should one be required to defend in a "street" situation.
From the information contained in your website, I am really enanored by your ability to reach in and draw out the student's inner strength and also to see the remarkable things that your students have done.
Please keep me in mind, or at least on your mailing list if you are planning on offering any short seminars during the summer, as I'd like to attend.
All the best in your success!
Sincerely,
Martin Kocanda, Streamwood, IL

Comments: Dear Master Roger Koo:
Thanks for speaking to me on the phone a few weeks ago. I received the first five tapes from your series and I am impressed. I have been training and teaching a Japanese style of Karate for almost 22 years. Recently, I resigned from my organization and have been looking around for new and interesting ways to train. While I do enjoy kata as performance art, my original purpose for joining martial arts was self-defense. After perusing your site and viewing your video tapes, I have to say that you have a very impressive philosophy and a superior training method. I have already begun to incorporate your system into the classes I teach, especially the full contact hand mit and focus shield training. The idea of holding two shields together works great and I am also taking your advice and purchasing better equipment for the class. I have abandoned most of the old curricullum I followed for years including "traditional" warm up exercises, stances, blocking and punching and ESPECIALLY the primary training of techniques executed in the air. We have begun wearing shoes in class, and probably will repace our keikogi tops with school t-shirts. Your site has also helped me in terms of the way I view the belt ranking system. My white belts are kicking harder than some black belts I know! You can be sure that I will be ordering all of your tapes and incorporating much of your curricullum into my classes. I greatly appreciate the work you have done. Anyone who lives in my area is invited to train at my class which is located at 660 Ocean Avenue in New London, CT 06382 (mapquest.com can give you directions). I am wondering whether you have a National Organization that my school can affiliate with. While we would not wish to completely lose our identity, I'd be proud to count my school as an Affiliate of Koo Self Defense. Finally, can I host a seminar here in New England with you or a senior student teaching? Looking forward to more in the future, thanks again!
